There is no default database in Oracle...

Connect to Scott's schema and, at the SQL*Plus prompt, type

SQL> DESC EMP;
or
SQL> SELECT * FROM EMP;
or
...

What do you mean by connecting to the default database? What do you call "a database"? Is it a schema (as Michel already asked)? You might create an operating system script which would do that for you. For example, on MS Windows you'd create a BAT script which would look like this:
REM conn_scott.bat

SQLPLUS scott/tiger@ora10
You'd call it at the command prompt (or create an icon on your desktop) with
C:\>conn_scott

C:\>sqlplus scott/tiger@ora10

There is definitely a default database when it comes to Windoze.

I beg to differ unless you use XE there is no database at all after installation.

I'm not suggesting a default database necessarily exists after install, I'm referring to connecting to a default database as the OP's question was referring to.
