hi this is preeti,
I have a table emp and i want to update the rows based on salary filed (i.e., sal > 3000) I want to increase1 1000 for these recors . what i need is I have to get the count of these rows that r updated. how to write aquery

you should start studying documentation found eg. at http://tahiti.oracle.com/. You will find there a lot of useful examples too.
How to update desired rows: SQL Reference, SQL Statements, UPDATE
How to get the updated row count: PL/SQL User's Guide and Reference, PL/SQL Language Elements, SQL Cursor
