i have 2 databases in my oracle 10g at command prompt if i switch database using 'set oracle_sid=sid' i discover that i can't login to the current database that i have switch to when i lunch sqlplus but it will allow me on the initial database that that i was. what could be the problem.

Cut and paste your complete unix and sqlplus session. What you supplied does not offer any help.
