Hi,
I have a solaris 9 server, where several 9i databases(development) are running. (about 90 gb) . Now to test the upgrade to 10g, they want to have a 10g database set up on the same server. I read in the documentation that it is possible...(oracle home - should be in different directory) but other than that are there any precautions to take? - Will it for example disturb the existing 9i systems if anything goes wrong in the 10g installation? also while doing the 10g installation, are the existing 9i databases supposed to be down? Also is 9i client compatible with the 10g database?
Shall be thankful for info on this.

Thank you very much Michel!
So it also means that if something goes wrong during 10g installation,, than the existing 9i databases won't be affected right?
and is the install procedure different that the procedure in a stand alone system (having just one version.)? does the install require a shutdown of the other databases that are running?
Over the weekend I will try out everything in my assembled pc, but this info. helps me a lot.

One more question:
our database is currently 9i, so we have 9i client (version 9.2.0.1) for connecting to the 9i database. Now after installing the 10g database, will the existing 9i client be able to connect to the 10g database? Or Is there a version specific limit like only client of version 9.2.0.4 or later can connect to the 10g database?
The migration guide (http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14238/intro.htm#sthref31) on this topic says that:
" (You can) have Oracle8i, Oracle9i, and Oracle Database 10g clients connecting to any or all of the databases." so this is pretty much clear, but I still doubt whether there is a version specific limit.(I did not refer to the certification matrix or other such thing).
Interestingly, I saw a link, on googling , which says that client version should be at least 9.2.0.4:
http://searchoracle.techtarget.com/expert/KnowledgebaseAnswer/0,289625,sid41_gci1251198,00.html
This seems to be in contrast to what the Oracle doc says.
Can you please share your views on this.

Any 8i, 9i and 10g client can connect to any 8i, 9i and 10g database except...
8i must be >= 8.1.7
9i must >= 9.2.0.4 (that is not 9.0 at all)
There are some bugs with client 10.1 and server < 8.1.7.4
Moreover, 8i client does not connect to a database which is does not know the character set. For instance, an 8i client cannot connect to a 10g database with AL32UTF8 character set because this character set is not known of 8i.

Michel
