I'm a newbie, using Oracle 8.1.7, and am trying to rename check constraints, when I do I get the following problem:

SQL> alter table APPLICATION rename constraint AVCON_410909_ACTIV_000 to APP_CK;
alter table APPLICATION rename constraint AVCON_410909_ACTIV_000 to APP_CK
                               *
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-14155: missing PARTITION or SUBPARTITION keyword

I think I've heard that you cannot rename a check constraint this way in 8.1.7, rather I have to drop/create new ones. Can someone give me some guidance on this?

Read 8.1.7 documentation about the ALTER TABLE statement. You'll probably find out that renaming constraints isn't supported.
