I understand that the length of the name of any Oracle identifier has a max length of 30 chars. I am on 10g. I am running into a problem, though, where I am getting this error even though my column, table, and schema names are all 30 or less. I found that if I took out the explicit column references from schema.table.columnname to just columnname, the error went away.

Is there a further limit on the overall size of an explicit expression and, if so, where can I find that limitation?

Thanks, dw

Maybe you got something like that:
SQL> select 'A' "A123456789012345678901234567890" from dual;
select 'A' "A123456789012345678901234567890" from dual
           *
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-00972: identifier is too long

SQL> @v

Version Oracle : 10.2.0.3.0

Column alias should have at most 30 characters.

Regards
Michel

I found that the problem, at least in one case, was that the double-quoted schema/table/column names were in lowercase. The problem went away when I either a) removed all the double-quotes, or b) converted the quoted names to uppercase.

Thanks, dw
