Morning all,

Let me just preface this by saying that I'm a SQL Server person so please be gentle...

OK - I have a SQL Server here that has a load of oracle trace files in a folder that point to some error. The files are in the folder D:\oracle\ora81\rdbms\trace and are named xa_<Some GUID>.trc. There are 5 new files appearing every 10 minutes or so. The errors are:

ORACLE XA: Version 8.1.7.0.0. RM name = 'Oracle_XA'.
104928.1012:1248.1248.2:
ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied
104928.1012:1248.1248.2:
xaolgn: XAER_INVAL; logon denied.
ORACLE XA: Version 8.1.7.0.0. RM name = 'Oracle_XA'.
104928.1012:1248.1248.4:
ORA-00942: table or view does not exist
104928.1012:1248.1248.4:
xaorecover: xaofetch rtn -3.
ORACLE XA: Version 8.1.7.0.0. RM name = 'Oracle_XA'.
104928.1012:1248.1248.3:
ORA-12535: TNS:operation timed out
104928.1012:1248.1248.3:
xaolgn_help: XAER_RMERR; OCIServerAttach failed. ORA-12535.
ORACLE XA: Version 8.1.7.0.0. RM name = 'Oracle_XA'.
104929.1012:1248.1248.1:
ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied
104929.1012:1248.1248.1:
xaolgn: XAER_INVAL; logon denied.
ORACLE XA: Version 8.1.7.0.0. RM name = 'Oracle_XA'.
104929.1012:1248.1248.5:
ORA-00942: table or view does not exist
104929.1012:1248.1248.5:
xaorecover: xaofetch rtn -3.

There was one error in each file. I can't tell which one's first because the file timestamps are the same. They appear to correspond to Event log errors for MSDTC (event code 53297). One example of the event log error description is:

The XA Transaction Manager attempted to perform recovery with the XA resource manager. The XA resource manager reported that recovery was unsuccessful. DSN = MTxOCI.Dll.

The server in question is a Win2K Server SP4. It runs SQL Server 2000 which has some linked servers configured for 6 Oracle databases.
There only Oracle service installed is OracleOraHome81ClientCache but it isn't running.

I suspected that the errors were being caused by SQL Server jobs or DTS packages running, but the timestamps on the event log errors occur outside the range that the jobs are running.

I'm at a loss to explain what's happening. I assume that it's a process on this server that's trying to connect to a remote Oracle server but can't be sure. Ideally I'd like to be able to increase the trace level so I can see more detail but I can't seem to find any configuration file in the Oracle folders. I've also looked in the Component Services MSDTC transaction list but there's nothing in there.

Can anyone offer some suggestions as to where to go next?

Thanks in advance,

Tim
