You know what....you are right Todd :) It was indeed using the index to order as email_address was the primary key. I tried with first_name column, and voilla !! it displayed what I wanted to see.
I didnt realised that and was wondering how this could happen, for all these years, I knew rownum is assigned first and then they are ordered. Thanks Todd.
