yeah i go this with redhat 7.2 and oracle 9i release 2.. the installation worked fine and when i looked at the $ORACLE_HOME/dbs there was no intglobal.ora so of course when dbstart looked in the /etc/oratab file for a sid to start it couldn't find the initglobal.ora file.

i noticed that there was a single file call spfileglobal.ora - obviously create by the install so i renamed it an bang the database started and the shared memory realm ( oracle ) came up..

thanks to that guy who posted the how to manual create/backup a database article

now i figure i can begin that 18gig dump / load process that was due last friday =)
