i have read in a book that i can grant alter table on specific columns only to a user .
i am trying to do this :

connect scott/tiger;
grant alter(comm,sal)
on emp to hr;

but it is not working , any one has an idea ?

I do not think that is avilable. only ALTER ANY TABLE is available, that is system privs. Can you give me the oracle version you are using?

and 'ALTER' object privs. ..
OS> where you read about grant alter privs on specific columns.

actually i read this on this book:

ORACLE 8i THE COMPLETE REFERENCE

but i am using 9i.

are you sure you don't mean UPDATE instead of ALTER?
