HOW TO CONVERT A LARGE VARCHAR2 TO NUMBER??? [message #20308]

Hello,
When i try to convert a varchar2 to a number by TO_NUMBER('7895412365') i obtain this error ORA-01455.
P.S. I'm in Pro*C
Can somebody help me?

What is the size of the NUMBER column ?

I want to convert a varchar2 column into a number datatype and the longer of the number is not important because the only think what i need, is a column in number datatype.
P.S. I'm in Pro*C
