What mechanisms exists for documenting, on a table-by-table basis and a column-by-column basis, a database design? I know there are a variety of tools for reverse-engineering database schemas into ERDs, but it would be nice if one could add a comment or description field in the database itself to describe each table and column. Then, when the ERD was generated, the human-readable descriptions of the fields are there as well.

Thanks,
John

You can add comment to tables using the COMMENT statement.

comment on table test is 'this is just a comment on table ';

comment on column test.col1 'this is just a comment on column';
