physical files for data storage,

DBF (Data Base Files)

you don't open them when you start your database, they are opened automatically and then you access data through DBMS.

Well, I suppose a detailed answer to 'how do I open a .dbf and read the contents' would count as Expert.

But just sticking a 'No User Servicable Parts Inside' label on them is probably safer.
