Don't know how frequently this is come up, so forgive me if I'm asking something everyone else has asked.

I'm using Oracle Database Express Edition for Windows right now, and as soon as I get it going, I'm going to test an Oracle gateway on it. However, I can't even get the thing to create a table. Here's the statements I'm using:

CREATE TABLE state(
state_abbrev VARCHAR2(2));

INSERT INTO state
(state_abbrev)
VALUES
('WA');

SELECT * from state;

And it gives me the following error:

ORA-00911: invalid character

What's the deal here? I've tried putting WA in double quotes, even no quotes, leaving out the parentheses...the CREATE TABLE statement by itself doesn't work either, it gives me the same error. I didn't copy and paste this from somewhere, I typed into the SQL Command Console directly.

my initial guess would be that the semicolon on the end is the culprit.

You mentioned double quotes, no qoutes, parenthesis, ..., but you never mentioned SINGLE quotes (apostrophes). Did you try them too?

Would it help if you copy-paste this example?
SQL> create table state (state_abbrev varchar2(2));

Table created.

SQL> insert into state (state_abbrev) values ('WA');

1 row created.

SQL> select * From state;

ST
--
WA

SQL>

Actually, I did try single quotes, right off the bat. I finally realized that this thing has a command line option, so I put the same code in there that I used in the web interface, and it worked.

That's what I got when I removed the semicolons.

Oh, sorry, I though you were not the OP and showing us what error 922 means when the original error was 911.
