I've got the following problem with Oracle 10.1 and 10.2 databases:

We are using descending indexes in our application which worked well with Oracle 8i/9i databases. But with Oracle 10g there are often ORA-03114 errors when a descending index is used.

I can reproduce this errors with some small code on the sqlplus command-line:

create table tn_test (A number(10), B varchar2(10));

create index idx_tn_test on tn_test(A desc, B desc);

insert into tn_test (A,B) values ( 1,'123');

select A from tn_test where B = '123' and ((A = 0) or (A = 1));

-> ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel

Has someone an idea?

I can confirm this on on Windows. I see a lot of references to ORA-03113 and descending indexes on Metalink, but almost all related to 8i.

I would suggest opening a Service Request with Oracle Support.
