where its location in the unix machine ? /u01/.....
what is the benifits of this file ?

What version of Oracle are you using? Since 9i, the protocol.ora file is not used anymore. Parameters are now specified in the sqlnet.ora file.

For prior versions this file is located in $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin on UNIX systems, and in ORACLE_HOME\network\admin on Windows.
