Referential Integrity: How important? [message #155800] Wed, 18 January 2006 12:11 Go to next message

Hi,

I am working in a team that is building a data-centric web-based application. For reasons that, as far as I know, boil down to ease of implementation, we have chose not to have any RI constraints in the database.

From my limited experience and knowledge, RI is one of the most important concepts in a database and should be used every time a non-trivial application is being created.

First question - am I right in thinking that going in without RI is a potential landmine? Or am I exaggerating?

If the answer is that it is a flag that should definitely be raised, I need a little more proof than my say-so. Can someone point me to official documentation exhorting us otherwise?

The database of choice is Oracle 9i.

Thanks a lot for reading the whole thing. Looking forward to your response(s),
Sharad

Granted, it's not official documentation, but it does come straight from Oracle guru Tom Kyte:

Hi Art,

I have an exactly similar situation where there is an implementation of having NO FOREIGN Keys in the schema! I am trying to view the thread "

The AskTom site changed.
You should see a message with the new url. You also should be redirected automatically after a few seconds.

Thanks Frank, yes that is true, but this particular URL is coming empty...I mean there is no data of the question at all, hence I guess it requires perhaps some change in the link..

I tried to search for it; Google found a forum whose members also wondered why this particular page ("does referential integrity make the database slow") does not exist any more.

Sorry nirav_hyd. I only checked the first of the two links.
I left a note on the AskTom site asking where the url went.
