G'day ... do we have a FAQ for our 'search engine'? It is really as primitive as I think it is? I can't search numbers, I can't 'AND' two words, I can't make a word mandatory in the search. Am I being unreasonable?

I've been struggling with the same thing. Strings enclosed by double quotes would be handy too.

Hi,

There are several search engines on this site:

1. Forum Search Engine - http://orafaq.com/forum/s/

- Index is updated as people post and edit messages
- Limited in capability - numbers not indexed, phrase searches not allowed, etc.
- However, AND/ OR logic is supported!

2. Site Search Engine

- Much more sophisticated - see sample searches at http://orafaq.com/about/search-help
- Only indexed once per week

Improving (1) is on the TO DO list.

Best regards.

Frank

I've added the second link to the stickies in the SQL forums.

Thanks, Frank.

I did a search for 'XP SP' and got no hits. Methinks that the indexing engine has "2 character words = kill" turned 'ON'. Is the minimum length of a word a system variable for our search engine? What about words containing numbers? Is that a setting or hardcoded? I would really like to be able to search for 'SP2'.

I know the 'big search' can do 'XP SP' but it is not forum selectable unfortunately.

Hi David,

Unfortunately it is hard coded. I'll print out the programs tomorrow to see if we can change some of the defaults.

Best regards.

Hi,

We've added a "Search with site-level search engine" link to the forum's search page. Changing the forum's search engine wouldn't be as easy as originally thought.

Best regards.

Thanks ... Any 'joining' link like this one helps everyone navigate to the various features available on the site.

This 'no search on 2 character strings' sucks. I want to find entries that refer to 'vb' but it is not possible.

@Frank Naude, do we have a newer version of the website software since I last asked? Does this newer version permit short word searching?

Hi David,

Yes, a newer version is being prepared. However, the search code will unfortunately remain the same for now.

As workaround, please use the site level search engine. To search for "vb", try http://www.orafaq.com/search/vb

Best regards.
