hi
if three different applications are running on three different machines and are connected to one server
do they have single databse called local database or they have local and remote databses

Remove database is define the database server is located in other machine and access by client machines.

Local Database is define database server is located in same machine and access by locally.

Now most of databases have their own interface engine to link out the application with database. like Oracle Net for Oracle database. Hope this is helping.
