Hi all,
I got an error while trying to install Oracle 9i on a Win XP machine. So, I decided to wipe out Oracle completely and starting again. I deleted all the Oracle entries from the registry and then tried deleting the folder. But while doing that, I am getting the following error -
"Cannot delete oci:Access denied"

The disk is neither write-protected nor is the oci.dll file in use. Could anyone please suggest a solution.

We faced same problem, and restarted our laptop almost 10 times
before we took some out of box strategy:

Removed all other files except this oci.dll.

And restarted system.

And we were able to delete this file.

I always ( 2/3 times on my home Wintel box) remove Oracle by:
1) stopping all Oracle services.
2) Deleting the physical Oracle directory
3) Deleting program files\Oracle
4) Cleaning the registry
5) Cleaning the start menu

I tend to forget some things so usually I end up with a complete new Windows installation Razz .

@girish: Oracle installer has never worked for me (not 8i (Windows 98, XP Personal&Pro) nor 9i, always on Windows XP Pro). I don't know about the 10g version though. I ended up doing the same things like I would without the installer.

It's true you need some reboots before everything is wiped out.

Hi Maaher

For 8 & 8i, agreed I too faced these issues.. & yes, I too ended up reinstalling windows many a times.. but i believe, 9i works fine. It never gave me any problem. The only thing is that always i need to remove oraclehome directory physically from the system after each removal of Oracle installation.

Regds
Girish

[EDIT]: Even in 9i this problem persists. I was wrong in saying this earlier that in 9i this is not there. actually earlier i used to do reinstalltion, so never faced this issue. Error for oci.dll still exists. And yes the oracle home directory had to be removed manually.
Checked this after removing oracle 9i from my system.Razz

We ran into the same issue and after going through the oci.dll registry entries we found that the "Distributed Transaction Coordinator" service (msdtc process) was locking the oci DLL.

So, stop the "Distributed Transaction Coordinator" service and delete the DLL. Restart the service.

Try deleting the file (oci.dll) itself from bin directory before installing oracle. And, make sure you stop all oracle related services running before deleting the oci.dll file and installing oracle. This problem occurs when you re-install on a system.

Thanks

Hi,
You have to first delete oracle servies through ORADIM utility after you have to RESTART machine and DELETE ORACLE PHYSICAL DIRECTORY ...you will not get any OCI.DDL file error.

Regards
Taj

Dear friends:
In my case I had a problem with this file: “wvUmmjkh.dll” so I had to do these things to delete it at all.
1- Download the software “Unlocker” in this link:
http://www.download.com/Unlocker/3000-2248_4-10493998.html?tag=lst-1&cdlPid=10838644
2- Restart the computer in Safe Mode (when restart press F8).
3- Once the computer is ready again I went to the directory:
C:\windows\system32\wvUmmjkh.dll and “put the trash can very close” from the file to be deleted, I did it like this because the infected file was linked with the winlogon.exe and the explorer.exe and I had no option as fast as this.
4- Use the “Unlocker” software with the infected file and unlock all the files linked to the virus or spyware. In this moment you have to be very fast and throw the file into the trash basket, if you don’t make it fast, the computer is going to restart (in my case, because I was killing to important processes: winlogon.exe and explorer.exe) and you’ll miss the chance to make it in one simple try, I think that you have 2 or 3 seconds to do this action.
5- Once you finished deleting the file I had to download another program called “HijackThis”:
http://www.download.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html?tag=lst-1&cdlPid=10781312
and began to make a “Do a system scan only” of the disk. When it finished you can see a list of all processes running in your machine, in my case the file “wvUmmjkh.dll” was with an indication of “missing file” so the only thing that I had to do to end all this was to delete the registry who belonged to it, very simply, just check the box and press “fix checked” and the registry will be inmediatly erased.
Just in case, with “HijackThis” you have an option of “Delete on Reboot”, in some cases it works and sometimes not.
My best regards, Milton Martorella.

Download and run the process explorer.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

Search oci.dll using Find->Find Handle or DLL

Kill the svchost.exe process associated with the dll.

Delete the dll file using windows explorer.

Mahender's suggestion worked for me! after stopping all Oracle services and stopping the above service, I was able to delete the directory!
