An oracle home is essentially a directory where that copy of oracle sowtware is installed. e.g. if you want multiple oracle products of different versions of the same product, then you would install them in a different home. To run different products or different versions, the environment (ORACLE_HOME environemnt variable) needs to point to the correct directory. In Windows oracle.key file is used to tell windows which ORACLE_HOME in the registry to use.
