I have a D2K / Oracle application. D2K application and Oracle Database are hosted on separate servers.
Problem is with one of the PCs with Windows 2000 Professional. I have installed Oracle Forms and Reports Runtime on this PC. Now when I try running the Application, I get an error something like this:
"ORA-12571 - TNS: Packet Writer Failure".

I tried uninstalling and re-installing Oracle (even removed all the registry entries). But this does not work.

Everything is perfect with the Network configuration. Also there are lot of other Windows 2000 Professional Systems that are running the same application properly without any error.

Can anyone out there, give me the solution for above stated problem?

i know this is a month later than you posted, but... oh well.

many times i've been able to correct this problem by downloading and running ad / spy detection software (but not always). In the cases where it hasn't worked, unfortunately a reformat has been the fix :(

more recently i discovered the "netstat" command. The last couple of times i've seen this error, a persistent http connection has shown up (to a different site both times, but i forgot to look at the two machines i fixed yesterday with ad-aware). it is my belief (but i havent any empirical evidence) that it's this persistent connection that's killing the packets before they go.

editing the sqlnet.ora file has never worked for me. also, this shouldn't have to be done if it worked before, then failed, and then oracle was reinstalled.
sometimes you'll find ugly connections in your c:winntsystem32driversetchosts file, however.

i've even disabled tcp/ip or blown away the whole stack and rebuilt it (though i've never changed a network card in the attempt to fix it), and seen the connection remain. the two may be unrelated, but it seems suspicious to me.

i (and my co-workers) are still searching searching for a quick fix (which doesn't entail a wipe).

in all of the cases where ad-aware has fixed it (i'm sure something like spybot would have fixed it too), there was a TON of downloadware on board, or "internet games" or browser enhancers / enhancements (gator, euniverse, kazaa and its plug-ins, "rapid blaster", and more)

Oracle 8i & D2K was installed in my m/c with W2K server. It got infected with virus. Before it got infected, Oracle was running fine. I re-installed W2K and I installed D2K again. But when I try to connect this m/c with other Oracle server in my network with SQL PLUS it gives error: 'Packet writer failure'. Please help me with solution.

Change your sqlora.net file, that will find you on oracle installed directory e.g, d:oracle9inetworkadmin

comments all lines and save it.

after that, during installation may be a error occurd as DB_BLOCK_SIZE. and the error give u exact block size, that size u will change in Parameter file.

u will successfull.

Hi,

just my .02 cents. If you have Marketscore on your computer, you will get this error when trying to log in via sqlplus, etc. It is because Marketscore reroutes all your internet traffic to their proxy servers... thereby monitoring your surfing habits and screwing up your oracle connections.

It is extremely difficult to remove! I finally had to go to their website and followed their procedures to remove the software.

One way you can tell is to download Ad-Aware. get the latest reference file.
1. Do a scan. You will see marketscore entries - one of which says "Netsetter"
2. delete these entries and reboot your computer.
3. when booted, redo the scan. If you still get entries, you need to go to their website to get rid of it because Ad-Aware cannot. (don't believe me? redo steps 2-3 a few dozen times and you will get the idea)

Anyways, I hope this helps you guys.

With reference to my Previous posted message, It was successful, after some time, I had found same Error again "TNS Packet Writer Error". I m using Windows-2000 Server.

The Error was occur due to the Network Switch, the port blocked the packets, the system was running very smooth on the network, but when I opened the SQL the above error was occured.

For solving the problem, You can Switch Off the Switch / Hub and then restart it. After that u will able to login.

I read Mr. Allen Effenberger's solution with great skepticism. But, desperate with the same problem, I downloaded SPYBOT, ran it and VIOLA!!! The problem PC's starting working again.

Consider this a virtual hand-shake for your excellent advice!

Hello All,

I have tried "JCharb on March 05, 2004" reply for this TNS pocket failure error and It has solved the problem.

If you are facing this ora-12571 error, Please use below:

try:
TNS: Packet writer failure occurs during install of oracle 9i
file: .ora92networkadminsqlnet.ora

Previous --> SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)
Actually --> SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NONE)

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
/Senthil...

I was also facing the same problem Ora-12571:TNS:packet writer failure with Microsoft 2000 professional oracle 9i 2 release and forms 6i.
I couldnt connect from the oracle sqlplus with the instance.
The problem was....that the tcp/ip protocol was not working . so we configured the listner.the listner.ora contect is:

LISTENER =
(DESCRIPTION_LIST =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 000.000.0.0)(PORT = 1521))
)
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = NMP)(SERVER = 000.000.0.0)(PIPE = rameshp))
)
)

aLSO THE SERVICE NAME WAS CHANGED IN ORACLENETWORKADMINTNSNAMED.ORA TO
XYZ =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = NMP)(SERVER = ABC)(PIPE = ABC1))
)
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = XYZ)
)
)

ALSO FOR THE FORMS TO CONNECT THE CONNECTION STRING ADDED WAS IN ORANTNET80ADMINTNSNAMES.ORA:

test =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS =
(COMMUNITY = tcp.world)
(PROTOCOL = nmp)
(server = 000.000.0.0)
(Pipe = ABC1)
)
)
(CONNECT_DATA = (SID = XYZ)
)
)

NOW ITS WORKING FINE .THE 000.000.0.0 IS THE MACHINES(SERVERS) IP ADDRESS.
ANY CLIENT THAT IS TO BE CONNECTED TO THIS DATABASE SHULD BE CONNECT WITH NMP PROTOCOL.

THANKS FOR THE HELP.

I did the same thing. I read this post, and I was like, "there's no way that running a spyware killer would fix this Oracle problem." I didn't use Spybot, I used AdAware but it worked. I wonder what spyware is messing with oracle... Anyway, thanks for the advise. It helped a lot.

I had already used AdAware to fix remove a bunch of "junk" software that had gotten installed. I'm pretty sure that it was AdAware that broke the TCP/IP connectivity. I have had this happen once before on another XP machine. I downloaded WinsockXPFix and it took care of my problem. It does a TCP/IP reset (netsh) and rewrites some registry entryies and files.

I have a D2K / Oracle application. D2K application and Oracle Database are hosted on separate servers.
Problem is with one of the PCs & laptop with Windows xp. I have installed Oracle Forms and Reports Runtime on this PC. Now when I try running the Application, I get an error something like this:

I tried uninstalling and re-installing Oracle (even removed all the registry entries). But this does not work.

Go to http://cexx.org/lspfix.htm.Download and ran the LSPFix.exe program.

Finally, a solution that works. I had tried everything suggested by gurus everywhere in an attempt to fix this problem on a colleague's computer. I must add that I had already uninstalled all software packages that I believed were causing the conflict and run another winsock repair tool but to no avail. That is till now! Thankyou :)

I fixed this problem with some spy removal software. When I left work last Friday all was well. When I came in today (Monday), I could not use Toad (my Database tool) to access any of my Oracle Databases. I was getting the error: TNS Packet Writer Failure.

I tried several things but I ended up running Spybot (free download - http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10122137.html?part=104443&subj=dlpage&tag=button ) and Adaware (free download - http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button ) which are the 2 best known spy ware removal tools.

When I ran both, they both told me that they could not remove some spyware because it was running in memory, but they ask you if they can run when you reboot and you just say yes. Next time you reboot, Spybot and/or Adaware will run before anything loads in memory and they will then remove the spyware.

I had a few spyware programs running on my computer (like DSO Exploit). When I removed all the spyware, BINGO, no more TNS Packet Writer Failure errors!

Much thanks, Jared. . .I also used AdAware to remove alot of spyware, as well as manually deleting some files & registry entries. I finally got rid of the spyware & popups, but it broke my Oracle-based application. I tried all the fixes mentioned previously, and this was the one that worked!! Much appreciation to you!
