I'm designing a datebase system for a recording studio which i need to keep records of the length of every musical pieces. Shall I use date as the datatype? and how can i perform calculations on data in the form like HH-MM-SS?

according to ur requirement , u need only HH-MM-SS not the the date. so better use number datatype , which will store number of seconds. then u can change to HH-MM-SS any time
