My machine has an Oracle 8.1.6 client connecting to an Oracle 9.2 database. Is there any reason why I can connect to the database using sql*plus, but not using TOAD (a third party product) ? Toad uses sql*net, not odbc. I have another machine with a 7.3.4 client which can connect using Toad. The Listener.ora, sqlnet.ora and Tnsnames.ora files are identical on both machines.

It's pretty hard to diagnose without an error message. What does the SQL*Net Help (on the TOAD connection dialog) tell you about the SQL*Net install?

The error message is Ora-12541 TNS: No Listener. I have checked the listener service and I can connect from sql*plus on my machine and from Toad on a different machine, just not from this machine. In Toad, everything listed in sql*net config is valid, and it says my installation is correct and no changes are necessary.

I have stopped and restarted the OracleService[[db_name]] and the listener service, with no effect.
