We recently identified a 'user' that appears in our
audit logs that was not created through the software
Security Module.

How would one go about identifying how and where this
user came into existence that creates a log in the
system when a certain application is run.

DBA_USERS contains the creation date. Perhaps the user is created by some software package (like TOAD - which can have its own schema). The objects in the users' schema (if any) can give you some clue. Don't your logs provide you any information? If you look at what objects are accessed and what DML is executed by this user, you might know what he's up to...
