Dear
i want to calculate the Rank of the students on the basis of total obatin marks as shown in the figure. how i can use the Rank formula (in formula column to get this result).

I think that you can't do that within the formula column (but you might do it within the main report's query).

How did you get to database triggers?
LF is suggesting you use the rank analytical function in the main report query.

Uh, no ... no analytical functions here, it is Reports 6i that can't use them.

It appears that you'll have to create a view which will calculate all values you are interested in, and report will just display these values (a simple "select * from that_view").
