Anybody used MariaDB ? Looks like it is an open source replacement for MySQL.

I thought MYSQL was an open source RDBMS.
Why do you need to replace MYSQL?

Looks like there is a fear growing in industry about MySQL ownership is with Oracle. will they increase support costs ? will they keep the product open ? etc etc., so I think people started looking for such alternate options like MariaDB. I heard this news from my IT expert and was surprised. So just wanted to get some discussion going here.

Yes that's really bad news for Oracle. Most Linux distributions don't include MySQL in their repositories. They bundle MariaDB. The Open Source guys recommend MariaDB, because Oracle is according to them robber baron and evil.

Oracle should be more open and community oriented.
