Hi,
I have stand alone 11gR2 database. Do I need to configure the listener and have the tnsnames.ora file entries under Grid home and start the listener from Grid home or do I need to start from Oracle database home?
Thanks

yes

(What difference does it make?)

BTW, tnsnames.ora is a client only file & is not required on DB Server.
listener.ora is NOT required to start or use any listener!

Yes? to configure and start the listener from oracle home or from grid home?
If there is no difference, then why oracle provide listener configuration from 2 different homes?

Because: 1) grid is not mandatory and 2) it is better to use grid home if you install it; do you need to have listener configuration in all installations to configure it depending on your needs.

>Yes? to configure and start the listener from oracle home or from grid home?
Yes to either.
Listener does not know or care which directory is used to start it.
The database does not know or care which directory is used to start the listener.

No listener is required to start or use any Oracle DB.
Oracle leaves the choice up to the DBA to decided which choice is "better" for him/her regarding if listener is to be started & from where.
