A data file which has data present in this file, is there a way to know how the data is populated into the file, and from which table the data is taken from.

Still don't know what is a .dat file for you.
Extension is irrelevant, anyone can make any extension to any file.
How this file has been generated?
Once again, post the first lines.

Regards
Michel

Man, how is ANYONE capable of answering that question? Query might have had been
select num, name
from some_table
order by num

but what "some_table" is and whether column names really are "num" and "name" (column aliases, eh?) - who knows?

As far as I understood, he wants to know which query was used to produce that file ... so, I think that external table is not what he's looking for.

Hey Littlefoot and Roach,Thanks for your reply,I knew this way as you people have answered,i thought there would be some fuzzy logic or any sort of reverse engineering to know the tables and join conditions used to load data on to a data file.
