In case anyone is interested (and every DBA should be) it is currently possible to check out HCC without the correct environment.
HCC is supported only on Exadata/ZFS/Pillar storage, and not everyone has one of these available all the time. However, if you use the exact release above, apply patch p13041324 but not p13343438, configure an NFS version 3 Direct NFS mount (just use a loopback, you don't need a separate server) and create a tablespace on the mount then HCC works:
SQL> create table hcc2(c1 varchar2(10)) tablespace forhcc compress for archive high;

Table created.

SQL> 

It is the real thing, all the compression and performance benefits (and problems) are exactly as on the supported platforms.
