Hi all,

I'm planning on upgrading our 10.2.0.4 database to 11.2.0.1 on the same server. Would like to hear the best efficient method to do so from the experts.. My first option is to use datapump method, so I can take a backup and uninstall 10g on the server, Install 11g and import the data. But as I was reading through the documents on the upgrade, I think it is best to use DBUA instead. I'm planning to follow this document to upgrade using DBUA. http://debaatobiee.wordpress.com/2009/10/17/step-by-step-upgrading-oracle-10g-to-oracle-11g/

Few doubts on this..

1. Since I will be upgrading the existing 10g database, I suppose I need not uninstall 10g prior to the upgrade. I read that DBUA will shutdown the database during the upgrade. Currently we have Oracle 10g software in c:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1 and the data files are in different disk drives and also in c:\oracle\oradata folder. So will DBUA move the physical datafiles to the new location?
2. Do I need to stop 10g listener prior to running DBUA?
3. Will I be able to uninstall 10g after the upgrade?

Please help me... Any help is appreciated. Thanks a lot

1. No. The database files stay at the same place. It is a better practice to NOT put the database in the same path than the binaries.
2. Not necessary but why do you want to keep it up? The upgrade is made on the server, no need of the listener and after the upgrade you should use the listener of the new version.
3. Yes but is is easier if you have not the database inside the Oracle home.

I always try VERY, Very, very hard to get new server & upgraded OS when doing Oracle Version upgrade changing leftmost digit.
using DBUA is like Alice in Wonderland going through the mirror.
You have only 1 chance to get it correct, because once you start doing cold restore from backups is only recourse.
By having new server, the fallback is to unplug new system & plug in old system to the network.

Thanks Michel. One last question, some of the 10g data files in c:\oracle\oradata, will I be able to choose the same path in DBUA for 11g, ( 10g oracle home is c:\oracle\product\10.2.0, we will need to use c:\oracle\product\11.2.0 for 11g..) Is this feasible?

In DBUA you DON'T choose any path for database files, the database files are NOT moved.

Hi - you say that you intend to follow a document you found somewhere on the Web. It would be advisable to read the upgrade guide from Oracle,

The official documentation isn't always perfect, but I think one should always read it.
