brother installed oracle 10g on CentOS 5.6 using Basic Installation of OUI. I am asked in post install steps to log in as oracle O/S user and execute something. But often i don't have access to it, either it is owned by root or owned by brother. It is a constant headache. Could you please direct me to a resource or offer your own advice how to make these user accounts able to execute all that they are required to without having to chmod the entire filing system to 777? Thank you.

It would be helpful if you followed Posting Guidelines - http://www.orafaq.com/forum/t/88153/0/

when all else fails, Read The Fine Manual (see below)

ok, i see that now. i created the oracle user alright, but following steps from ivan dot kartik dot sk slash oracle slash install_ora10gR2_redhat dot html (can't use links until 5 messages posted on forum)
it doesn't tell you to log on as O/S user oracle before running Installer. That was my failure point. I learned here that I should follow oracle-written material.

accessing OS files is controlled by OS file permissions.
You need to understand & comply with basic OS file ownership & file permission masks.
