Take a look at time values (red marked):

./fa/9177/0/

1. Message was posted at 08:53
2. I answered it at 08:57
3. The original poster modified his message at 08:59

I thought that it is impossible to modify the original text after someone had replied to the message (not talking about moderators - in that case, it explicitly says (for example) "[Updated on: Fri, 08 July 2011 08:16] by Moderator").

Am I wrong, or something went wrong with the forum, or ...?

It is possible if OP clicked on "Edit" before you post your message and take long to type his correction.
In short, the control is made on the "Edit" button not on the "Apply message changes" one.

Michel
