Hi,

Need a basic level guidance.
Eg-
A) Retention policy is 1.
B) Before copying the backup from disk to TAPE. I Perform incremental backup.

Question:
1) How to copy the backup from disk to TAPE in windows xp?
2) After this where I can copy it, like another temp database?
2a) Where else I can store this backup from tape?
3) incase of recovery, can I recover from that alternative locations directly or should I copy back to TAPE and then recover it....
4) instead of these, can we make a backup directly to the tape or the alternative locations (eg- temp database) simultaneously taking backup to disk also?

Thanks is advance

>>1) How to copy the backup from disk to TAPE in windows xp?
Use a backup tool. Like net backup. You can directly backup to tape with rman too. Just need to spend more on MML license.

>>2) After this where I can copy it, like another temp database?
Upto you.

>>2a) Where else I can store this backup from tape?
Again, upto your imagination. But I would send it to offsite storage after a certain days of local retention.

>> 3) incase of recovery, can I recover from that alternative locations directly or should I copy back to TAPE and then recover it....
Whatever that works for you faster and reliable.

Hey Buddies,

Thanks a lot...
2A) What do you mean by "offsite storage"?

1) Is it another database, which is exclusive for storing backup datas?
2) or can we use Datawarehousing for it (Hope can't be)?
3) what cause the difference in performance between "Connecting tape directly to the target db" and copying through Disk and to the tape?

Thanks

Hi Mahesh,

Thanks for you are help.
1) what is the difference in terms of performance and convenience, b/w using the Tape connected directly to the target DB and through the hard disk of backup.

Only a benchmark can answer this; so do it and tell us.

I cannot answer this in generic terms.
Depends on your *disks* and *tapes*. RMAN handles them differently
and the buffer values are OS dependent.
Oracle documentation has some succinct information.
