Hi,

I want to install Oracle DB on a non-windows platform. What I want to know is what Linux/UNIX/Solaris/or whatever distribution is the most appropriate, I mean that I can install with minimal tuning and whithout additional packages installation. Just plug and play. I mean in case of OpenSuse 11.2 it's a real hell, multiple packages are missing. So what I want is the OS where it will need at maximum 1-2 external packages or updates.

PS: It's for educational purposes. And I need anything but NOT windows.

PS1: Sorry for my English, I'am from Ukraine.

Thank you.

Well, It has to do with OS, not with Oracle.
11gR2 is still new. My last install of 11gR2 on Sparc was just fine~!. Have not on tried SuSE yet. Did you already try 11gR1?.
I find express edition to be real-plug and play.

Just go to http://www.oracle.com/pls/db102/portal.portal_db?selected=3 and read the installation guide then choose the one you prefer but I doubt choosing the OS by the easiness to install is very smart. You install once and use your database every day maybe this second point is more important.

Thank you for help, I know it. What I wanted from users of this form is to get know who did it in reality cause you know it will never be just like in documentation. There is always some details we get to know only when dealing with it.

I am not DBA, I am software developer so for me question of OS is as important as question of ORACLE itself. I mean I do not want to use it once it is installed. It is of no interest for me. I want to know how to tune it and some low level features.

If you just want "know how to tune it and some low level features" but you "do not want to use it" then you don't need Oracle at all, just read the documentation, books and forums.

But I need to practice. So I want just to know which alternate OS works with ORACLE with minimal installation related work. And I want to know it from your experience.

The problem is that I can't use Windows software. What I need actually is to setup ORACLE db on non-windows OS. I don't mind which exactly. I have indicated this in the main topic.

Yes but your main purpose is for your education (on tuning and [Oracle] internals), so what is the problem with Windows?

Ahh, the problem with Windows is that like .NET it makes developers stupid. I mean with Linux\e.t.r, just by installing it you learn an immense bunch of things. With Windows you learn nothing. If for example the easiest way to install it is on Slackware, I will install Slackware and besides ORACLE install I will learn many additional things. Which is good for my salary Smile)).

So your criteria is "the easiest one among those that are not easy to install"?

As said before, Oracle10 XE is available for Linux.
Pretty straight forward installation.

The easiest ORACLE installation among those OS that are the most difficult to work with. I think that would be exactly what I want.
