hi,

i have some doubt about understanding of SCAN in 11g r2 and that is, if client request comes on SCAN in RAC enviornment(as shown in following tns entry)

test.world =
(DESCRIPTION=
(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST==apps-scan.world)(PORT=1521))
(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=R1211.world))
)

then what is the use of VIP then i.e we no longer use following in 11g r2 1.e

test.world =
(DESCRIPTION=
(ADDRESS_LIST=
(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=apps001-vip.world)(PORT=1521))
(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=apps002-vip.world)(PORT=1521))
)
(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=R1211.world)))
)

so can any one explain what exactly SCAN do ? is it do load balancing or what i am really confused please guide

thanks

regards

Where do you read that?
Post the link or quote an appropriate portion of the document you read.

Or do you mean this following SCAN:

Quote:
single client access name (SCAN)

Oracle Database 11g database clients use SCAN to connect to the database. SCAN can resolve to multiple IP addresses, reflecting multiple listeners in the cluster handling public client connections.

hi

well what u said is fine that clients connects to database through SCAN but what i am asking is what is the role of VIP.that is still there as VIP works like when one node get down and when connection comes on this down node VIP so it invaildate that connection and user get on other live node so this functionality still there
This is my question
