I have a table with millions of points (lat/lon). Inserting into the table with an index on the point column drops by speed by 1/4.

All of my queries use other fields to break down the query to only a few rows, so I don't really use the index. However, I still want to use the SDO_WITHIN_DISTANCE function with a polygon, to remove a few rows from the result set.

So, what is my least intensive (least effort to build/update) index I can put on the point column so Oracle will still support spatial queries?
