i want to know six month previous date from today date

can anyone tell me

It was January 18 2009.

Is your question Oracle related? If so, why did you put it into Linux forum?

ADD_MONTHS might help:
SQL> select add_months(sysdate, -6) from dual;

ADD_MONTHS(SYSDATE,
-------------------
18.12.2008 10:17:53
