I have a 10g database using AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8MSWIN1252 and I want to change to CHARACTER SET AL32UTF8 ,NATIONAL CHARACTER SET al16utf16.

I exported the database, deleted datafiles and created database with
CREATE DATABASE proddb
... CHARACTER SET WE8ISO8859P1
NATIONAL CHARACTER SET AL16UTF16

when I go to import I get imp-00037 character set marker unknown. I have tried setting NLS_LANG at the DOS prompt before importing but no luck.

Suggestions?

I would not have applied these brute force methods before doing some research.

Did you really blow away the source database?
Did you transfer the dump file?
Are you sure the file is not corrupted?
Post the complete error message.

Most probably, your dump file is corrupt.
