Hello all,

I am having a problem when I try to install Oracle 1g client on Windows.
My problem is that on step where I have to enter the hostname and the port I add my hostname localhost.localdomain, or localhost or IPaddr but when I test it it fails and I cannot understand why.

When I check the hostname form the Linux machine (VMware) through OEM it says localhost.localdomain port 1521.
Database is up and running and the listener too.

What can I do?

Will it be a good idea to install the Client in in the VMware machine where I have the Linux and the Oracle 10g DB was installed?

Is it possible to have in a linux machine the Oracle installed and from my Windows machine to install the client and be able to connect to the DB?

If it is possible do I have to create the tnsname.ora because there is not such file in Windows (in Linux machine it exist of course)?

The thing is that a tnsnames.ora file exist in the Linux machine under /home/oracle/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1/network/admin/tnsnames.ora

BUT in my windows machine there is no tnsnames.ora under \oracle\product\10.2.0\client_1\network\admin

How can I create it?

Thanks but I am not allowed to create any file under \oracle\product\10.2.0\client_1\network\admin
That's why I am asking if there is any other way

If you posted the full description of your problem maybe you and I will lose less time.

Copy it in a directory you are allowed to and set TNS_ADMIN environment variable.

I try to install 10g client to acdess my DB which is installed in linux machine (VMware)

I have added some attachments if they can help you.

On step 1 attachment you can see that I add in the host name:localhost or localhost.localdomain
/forum/fa/5481/0/

On step 2 where I ask to test the connection to the DB it fails.
/forum/fa/5482/0/

This is my issue and also that, correct me if I am wrong, the tnsnames.ora was supposed to be created by itself but in my path there is no tnsnames.ora.

Also When I open the client and it asks me to create a new DB to connect and I add all the infrmation required (hostnmae, SID etc)I receive the following error:
Failed to parse tnsnmaes.ora file
Service Alias excepetion 11

I created by myself the tnsnames.ora file in Windows (I copy it from the linux machine) and I created the DB from EM Client (the same from tnsnames.ora)but when I enter connect it just do nothing and the EM exits by itself.
