in this table, a column called line_no.
which holds a value of 1.

table contains 5 rows.

how to update this table (5 rows) by single update statement - with incrementing line_no value by 1 for each row.

As already been asked to you: follow the guidelines, please read OraFAQ Forum Guide, especially "How to format your post?" section.
Make sure that lines of code do not exceed 80 characters when you format.
Indent the code (See SQL Formatter) and align the columns in result.
Use the "Preview Message" button to verify.
Also always post your Oracle version (4 decimals).

You have to first know how to order the rows in your table, then use rownum pseudocolumn for instance.

Michel
