A search of this forum for 'get_host_name' returned http://www.orafaq.com/forum/m/219372/67467/?srch=get_host_name#msg_219372 which points to http://www.orafaq.com/forum/m/181995/67467/?srch=machine+name#msg_181995

If your AS runs a Unix derivative then use 'hostname' as part of a 'host' command.

How can I return the result of this command in a variable?

Depending on the version of Forms you are using you could write a 'C' program that stores it in a 'global' or pipe the information to a flat file and read it. You could also research 'ora_ffi' and see what it has to offer.
