At Database Startup I get:

Error: ORA-01033 ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress

It eventually tells me it can't read/open one of the control files...

If I have a corrupt/damaged CTL file. What is the best way to work around the damaged file and get the database back up?

Thanks!

The 1st thing you should do is take a complete cold backup of what you have now.

By not referencing it, or possibly copying a good one over the top of it.

Any ideas how or why the control file went bad?

Are you sure no others files got corrupted?

Either copy a good control file ovber the bad one or remove the bad control file from the control file list.

hi

Take the back up of all the three control file .
and place them in a safe place and take a control file and make three copies and then change the name of the copied files as the contol file 1 and control file 2 and control file 3 . and if it does not work then try with the other two from the backup . hope this will solver the problem

if u still have the problem then use the command

Smile
shut down all the instances

sql:>RECOVER DATABASE USING BACKUP CONTROLFILE UNTIL CANCEL

then the control file will be recovrered and and hope that u can use the database as usual.if still u have problem tell me the error u are typing in the recover command.
so that i can suggust u in a better way .
