Who are "only asking" people? Those who posted only one message, and it was the initial message in that topic (i.e. a question)?

Those who never answer to a question/topic from someone else, just posting questions for them.
For this line, I did not take into account "Test", "Suggestion & feedback" and "Community Hangout" forum. I think someone answering only in these forum are not really actively participating in the site.
Note that one of these people asking 10 questions in a quarter or having a very long topic can be in the "Active members" list. Maybe I should take out of this list people not answering to others questions, it'd be more consistent with what I tend to emphasize (which is not very clear to me). Statistics are not innocent. Smile

I see; if I understood correctly, they can have many messages, but all of them are posted in topics they created.

So the deciding factor is that the IP of the original poster should not match with what of the folks participating in the topic. Thus, the "only askers" are the members who have always posted the first topic but never participated in any other topics(first topic not owned by them). How did you manage to get that stats? Complicated!

Due to problem with IP, I no more manage those kind of question with IP but with a "poster id" which comes with every message. This is the way we succeed to provide again the statistics.
Message row I have also comes with a "topic id".

This is exactly what I do.

Talking with and rereading my query, I see a bug in it.
There are much more "Only asking" people (around 78%) and, removing "Only asking" from "Active" ones these later are far less (around 4% instead of 14%). The (non-)variation of the proportion across the time is interesting.
I will fix this this evening (for me, in about 10 hours).

Yes, the 2 bars are not one above the other one but one ("Very active") in front of the other one ("Active").

It shows the number of users banned, it means the account moderators banned that many users. Does the spike also mean those many spammers attacked the site after 2014Q2. Perhaps old users who were found with IPs 122.169.x.x were banned in bulk.

If that's not the case, then the straight interpretation would be that, so many spammers actually got registered and then banned during that time period. And it is a serious issue of spam attack Sad

By the way, why not block the spammers right at the registration page itself? We know the common IP range of the spammers. Not sure if Frank already gave a thought to this. Most of the spam adverts seen here in OraFAQ are also commonly seen in comp.databases.oracle.server. Or may be in other forums as well.

Edit : Oops, I forgot. Last time Frank banned one of the IP - http://www.orafaq.com/forum/mv/msg/188688/630761/#msg_630761 Michel gave some statistics too.

Just a little explanation.
There is no ban date.
I report banned users at the time they have created their account.
So this is the number of users who have registered each quarter and was banned some time later.
For example, the 275 banned accounts in 2014Q4 are 275 created accounts in this quarter and banned before the 01/01/2015.

For the 122.169.128.0-122.169.199.255 accounts, here are the detailed figures:
QUARTE CREATED BANNED
------ ---------- ----------
2002Q2 1 0
2005Q1 1 0
2007Q1 5 0
2007Q2 33 0

Edit : Summing up the numbers show that banned is less than created. Does it mean few spammers are still active?

Some of them, those before 2014, never spammed.
Some were not banned before 01/01/2015, I think about the 3 of 2014Q4.
Some from the given IP range did not spam, actually from the very detailed statistics per IP, we could narrow the range a little bit; this will explain the 11 from 2014Q1/Q2/Q3.
These last days, we are spammed by the same sites but from IP 122.175.7x.*, it seems they left 122.169 for the moment.

Yes. I observed it too. Past few days whatever posts I deleted belonged to 122.175.75.10, if I remember correctly.

Forum statistics have been updated.
I was working on new results like most popular topics but I have some problems you can see yourself.
For example, the second most "viewed" topic (after the forum guide) is SQL ,PL/SQL & D2K Interview Questions accessed almost 350,000 times since its creation on 03-OCT-2003 that is an average of 83 times each day since then.
More surprising the 7th one is 在suse10下安è£...oracle9i遇到é--®é¢˜ã€‚急 in Japanese forum (the 9th one in the first page of this forum) which was viewed 293339 at the moment I write this, that is 88 times each day since its creation on 16-JAN-2006.
I doubt we have so much visitors speaking Japanese and wanted to read this topic. Actually we have only 371 Japanese members and the numbers of posts from this country were:
YEAR NB_POSTS
---- ----------
1999 5
2000 7
2001 23
2002 194
2003 91
2004 66
2005 120
2006 103
2007 132
2008 547
2009 78
2010 103
2011 50
2012 33
2013 35
2014 10
2015 12

You want to know which topic is the most viewed each day since its creation?
This is John's DB12c + APEX 4.2.6 hosting, US$49.95 a month, viewed 5426 times each day. Congratulations!

I think these high figures of number of views come from robots and search engines and I can't get the difference between human beings and tools accessing the pages.
So I don't think I can post in a useful way these charts you asked me.

A last word about spammers; here's the chart:

To me, not as scary as the fact that an advert I posted is getting 5000+ hits per day, and that (as far as I know) none of them has resulted in any business. Many companies spend a fortune on this "Search Engine Optimization" stuff. If I had paid an SOE consultant to place that advert, and he told me that figure for hits, I would think "fantastic!" and pay his invoice but in fact he would have delivered nothing of any value whatsoever.

which seems to indicate some weariness in their attack (most of their messages and accounts don't live more than a couple of minutes) but these last 2 days they came back with about 10 accounts per day. Sad

MemBanG Smile is high. Though, as vast majority of those spammers come from the same IP address, I suppose that all of them are, actually, one or maybe two "true" persons. They already know that they will be banned along with their messages deleted. So: we could do a test - delete messages without banning them. I don't expect number of spam messages to be higher than now, but we wouldn't have to ban them.

You know, the 5 monkeys social experiment.

Removing that restriction made life MUCH easier for us, as we didn't have to delete 5 messages but only one. If you wanted to ban the poster, you could have done it anyway, regardless number of messages he posted.

This limit has been removed to prevent from having 4 dummy posts before the actual spam, so we had to delete 5 posts instead of one.

From the same IP range but they seldom use the same IP but in the same day but I agree these spams come from few persons.
Yes, it is more likely than we won't have more spams if we don't ban these spammers as we could see they create 2 or 3 accounts at the same time (with the same IP) but use only one to spam, even if this one is banned they do not use the other ones.
Anyway, it's not a big deal to ban them and a pleasure for me. Twisted Evil

Sometimes I feel sorry about those people. Probably they don't do it because they LOVE to do it, but because they are paid for it (so that they can buy food, clothes, go to the cinema, etc. - everything we do with money we get for our jobs).

Just recently, I stumbled over a job advert which said something like: "Your job is to visit web addresses I provide, create an account, post text I provide, take a screenshot when you post it and yet another when it (the message) is approved". Classic spammer, is it not?

Forum statistics have been updated with the last quarter figures; slight modification in fora and posters charts: average posts for the forum and period is given instead of poster country.

Spammers chart shows they start to understand this is just a waste of energy:
