Oh, yes! Decision to enforce moderators' approval for Forum newbies was absolutely marvelous. I don't think that any of "serious" posters had to wait for long before his/her message was approved, but it drastically affected spammers. Congratulations to everyone!

They found a new way: the first message is something like "thanks for the question" which is something we can't not approve, then come the spam.
So if you have such message as first one, do not approve it until OP post another one (which will then also be waiting for approval).

Forum statistics have been updated with the last quarter figures.
Sorry for the delay but I made some internal modifications to crunch the data:

1/ IP ranges allocated to countries are temporary so all along these almost 20 years they move and I had to reconstruct the IP database for the previous quarters and when not available I used the data from the closest quarter I have. An example is some IP ranges that were allocated to South Africa are now to Sudan, the consequence, if I have used the current database, is that the first users of this site were from Sudan, I think some would be surprised to know they are Sudaneses. Smile

2/ Some IP are located to a whole continent and not a specific country and so are ignored for statistics about countries. In these cases I now set the country from the location of the greatest number of messages. For instance, John Watson registered with an IP located in Europe, no specific country, most of his messages are posted from United Kingdom so I located him in this country (but not his messages, messages that are clearly located in a country still belongs to this country).

3/ The IP database saw its format changed; from (simplifying) a "FromIP;toIP;country" format it has changed to a CIDR notation so I had to change the way I crunch it.

Thank you, Michel!

Tragically, almost 90% of members posted up to 3 messages (while almost 50% of registered members didn't post a single message). This is turning into a moderators only club; now and then someone posts something, but vast majority of messages is posted by only a few active members (read: moderators, with honorable exceptions of Ed who didn't turn 1000 messages and flyboy who declined the offer (as far as I remember)).

Now, what does that mean? That people find answers simply by Googling, or do they prefer other forums over OraFAQ (I can't tell; OTN Forums are probably well-visited. dBforums shut down a week or two ago. You might know some others), or ...?

As of spammers: there aren't many of them recently, are they? I downloaded statistics ZIP file but it doesn't contain that info.

Many (most of?) "occidental" forum have seen their number of posters decrease since Indians were able to create their own blog for free 10 years ago. Many of our former Indian posters who were beginners have now their blogs. The content of these blogs is for most part FAQs, starting from an error or a question found in other forum (like OraFAQ) and explaining how to solve. The advantage of these blogs is to directly provide the solution for a problem, and in the words of their culture; nothing to ask, nothing to explain, and more suitable to their mind. Some of them are listed in our blogs page, have a look to them.
The number of regulars is quite stable, some go others come.

I posted banned accounts when there was a problem now it is quite stable. Here's the chart:

OK, I understood the explanation, thank you.

Spammers: that looks exactly like graph you posted in August 2017, doesn't it?

dbforums shut down? I didn't know this. I use it very rarely, but I didn't know that happened.

Oh, yes - months ago! I tried to contact Pat Phelan (who was one of the moderator/administrator staff there, no luck. I met Tony Andrews on one of other forums; he didn't even know it is down, and doesn't know why it happened. A mystery.

Pity. If you (by some miracle) manage to make contact, please ask for a backup of their forum so we can import it here.

There were a bug in some queries when some countries have the same number of posts.
Queries have been fixed and pictures updated (number of posts per country for the last 12 or 6 months).

I improved the picture of banned members splitting it in 2:
