When should one upgrade to Oracle 9.2?

ASAP: Oracle 9.2 is the terminal release of Oracle9i. The projected de-support date for Oracle 9.2 is September 2005. Oracle corporation will offer EMS (Extended Maintenance Support), for an additional fee, until 20 September 2008.

  • How does one install Oracle 9.2? Order the CD pack from Oracle Corporation or download from otn.oracle.com. Load the first CD and open the "index.htm" file within a web browser. Carefully read the "Install Guide" before proceeding with your installation. When completed, perform the pre-installation tasks. The actual installation can be started by running the "runInstaller" command on the first CD.

  • How does one upgrade a database to Oracle 9.2?

Run the Database Upgrade Assistant (ORACLE_HOME/bin/dbua). The DBUA can upgrade Oracle 7.3.4, Oracle 8.0.6, Oracle 7.3.4 and Oracle 9.0.1 databases to Oracle 9.2.0.1.

Select the database that needs to be upgraded. The assistant asks you if you have backed-up your database and offer to do a cold off-line database backup in case you haven't. It then displays a list of action that will be performed during the upgrade process. Click on "FINISH" to get the process going.

Please note that the database you upgrade will be shut down. This might sound obvious, but the process is so easy, that one can easily overlook this important point.

One can also choose to upgrade Oracle manually. Follow the instructions in the "Migrations" guide to perform a manual upgrade. The manual upgrade essentially boils down to running a @?/rdbms/admin/u[OLD_RELEASE] script. For example, u0900010.sql will upgrade Oracle 9.0.1 to 9.2. Optional components can be automatically upgraded with the @cmpdbmig.sql script, however, components like Oracle Text and Ultra Search require additional manual upgrade actions.
