Providing Limited Patch Wizard Access to EBS End-Users

Mon, 2017-06-05 14:40

Patch Wizard helps you identify useful or critical missing patches for your EBS environment.

One of the most common questions we get is how to provide Patch Wizard access to end-users without giving them full access to the rest of the system administration features included with the System Administration responsibility.

In response to these questions, we created a responsibility for Non-Sysadmin users that contains only the Patch Wizard screens. Tips on using this new responsibility are covered here:

  • Patch Wizard FAQ (Note 976688.2) - see tab "Setup Patch Wizard Responsibility for End Users"

This Note shows how to create a new Patch Wizard responsibility for end-users, how to configure preferences and how to add restrictions for specific menus and functions.

New OA Framework 12.2.6 Update 3 Now Available

Thu, 2017-06-01 02:00

Web-based content in Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 runs on the Oracle Application Framework (also known as OA Framework, OAF, or FWK) user interface libraries and infrastructure. Since the initial release of Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2 in 2013, we have released a number of cumulative updates to Oracle Application Framework to fix performance, security, and stability issues.

These updates are provided in cumulative Release Update Packs, and cumulative Bundle Patches that can be applied on top of the Release Update Packs. In this context, cumulative means that the latest RUP or Bundle Patch contains everything released earlier.

The latest OAF update for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2.6 is now available:

Where is this update documented?

Instructions for installing this OAF Release Update Pack are in the following My Oracle Support knowledge document:

Who should apply this patch?

All Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2.6 users should apply this patch.  Future OAF patches for EBS Release 12.2.6 will require this patch as a prerequisite.

What's new in this update?

This bundle patch is cumulative: it includes all fixes released in previous EBS Release 12.2.6 bundle patches.

This latest bundle patch includes fixes for the following issue:

  • Cosmetic issue: Framework email notifications have boxes around headers
  • Launching Forms application in Accessibility mode fails in the second iteration in IE11 browser.
  • In attachment image style, adding an attachment fails when a primary key of an entity map has the value as null.
  • In Japanese enabled environment, the text in the advanced table Total cell is getting split into multiple lines when the text has spaces.

Enabling an EBS Global Diagnostics Trace

Wed, 2017-05-31 12:23

Oracle E-Business Suite provides several types of logs.  One of the tools you can use is the Logging Framework, which allows you to collect and view log messages in Oracle Applications Manager.  The Logging Framework collects debug messages, errors, and alerts.

A Global Diagnostics Trace can help you diagnose issues if errors occur when users click a button or select an option. It's a targeted trace that can be run per user, thereby minimizing the impact on the overall performance of your environment. This kind of trace is also known as an FND Diagnostics Trace or Oracle Applications Logging.

You can find a quick summary of steps to enable a Global Diagnostics trace here:

There's lots more information about more-powerful logging options in the following manuals

Can EBS Nodes Be at Different Operating System Levels?

Mon, 2017-05-29 02:00

Oddly, a category of EBS architecture questions that I'd thought long-settled is starting to reemerge.  I've recently seen several queries along the lines of:

  1. Can EBS database nodes and application tier nodes be on different operating systems?
  2. Can multiple EBS database nodes be on different operating systems or levels?
  3. Can multiple EBS application tier nodes be on different operating systems or levels?

Here are the answers to these questions:

1. Can EBS database nodes and application tier nodes be on different operating systems?

Yes.  In some cases, the operating systems certified for EBS database nodes cannot be run on the application tier. These are called "database tier only" certifications. It is quite common to see this configuration, especially in large EBS environments.

2. Can multiple EBS database nodes be on different operating systems or levels?

No.  From our "Installation Guide: Using Rapid Install" documentation:

"All database tier nodes must be at the same operating system patch level."

3. Can multiple EBS application tier nodes be on different operating systems or levels?

No. From our "Installation Guide: Using Rapid Install" documentation:

"All application tier nodes must be at the same operating system patch level."

Here's a screenshot from our EBS 12.2 documentation (emphasis in red):

Another Personal Milestone at Alliance 2017

Fri, 2017-05-26 02:00

I was deeply moved when I received a Lifetime Service Award from the Oracle Applications User Group (OAUG) in 2011. I still think I was awfully young for that award at the time, but I was honored and consider it an important milestone.

I reached another milestone at the recent Higher Education User Group (HEUG) Alliance conference in Las Vegas. I was in a meeting with the HEUG's Product Advisory Group when I noticed something unusual hanging on someone's nametag:

To this day, I don't think that my friends or family really understand what I do for a living.  But when my name shows up unexpectedly on a button, that's powerful positive feedback from the people who really count.

I'd like to thank the Higher Education User Group and the Oracle Applications User Group for their ongoing support for our EBS user community. I know that I speak for the entire E-Business Suite team when I say that your energy and enthusiasm inspires us to keep building the best products for you.

And, if you're an EBS user who isn't an HEUG or OAUG member, I strongly encourage you to sign up.  The cost is trivial but the benefits substantial.  In addition to running some of the most-useful independent conferences for EBS, these groups advocate tirelessly on behalf of the EBS user community. They have influenced our products and policy in countless ways and they deserve your support.

EBS 12.1 and 12.2 certified on IBM AIX 7.2

Fri, 2017-05-12 15:35

I am pleased to announce that Oracle E-Business Suite Releases 12.1.3 and 12.2.3 (and later updates to those respective releases) are now certified on AIX 7.2, the latest operating system for the IBM AIX on Power Systems (64-bit) platform.

Installations of E-Business Suite on these operating systems require specific patches to the latest startCD prior to installing, followed by the application of the 12.1.3 RUP or the 12.2.3 RUP (or higher) for EBS 12.1 and 12.2 respectively. Cloning of existing EBS 12.1.3 or 12.2 environments to AIX 7.2 is also certified using the standard Rapid Clone process.

There are specific requirements to upgrade technology components such as the Oracle Database (to 11.2.0.4 or 12.1.0.2) and Fusion Middleware components as necessary. All requirements, known issues, patches needed, etc. are noted in the Installation and Upgrade Notes (IUN) below and must be reviewed and implemented.

The Certifications page ('Certify') on My Oracle Support is in the process of being updated with this information.

Reminder: Upgrade Microsoft Vista Desktops

Thu, 2017-05-11 02:00
Vista logoMicrosoft ended support for Windows Vista on April 11, 2017.  The official support dates are published here:

Windows Vista is certified for desktop clients accessing the E-Business Suite today.  Our general policy is that we support certified third-party products as long as the third-party vendor supports them.  When the third-party vendor retires a product, we consider that to be an historical certification for EBS.

What can EBS customers expect after April 2017?

After Microsoft desupports Vista in April 2017:

  • Oracle Support will continue to assist, where possible, in investigating issues that involve Windows Vista.
  • Oracle's ability to assist may be limited due to limited access to PCs running Windows Vista.
  • Oracle will continue to provide access to existing EBS patches for Windows Vista.
  • Oracle will provide new EBS patches only for issues that can be reproduced on later operating system configurations that Microsoft is actively supporting (e.g. Windows 7, Windows 10)

What should EBS customers do?

Oracle strongly recommends that E-Business Suite customers upgrade their desktops from Windows Vista to the latest certified equivalents.  As of today, those are Windows 7, 8.1, and 10
