Oracle 12c Unified Auditing - Pure Mode

Continuing our blog series on Oracle 12 Unified Auditing is a discussion of Pure  Mode. Mixed mode is intended by Oracle to introduce Unified Auditing and provide a transition from the traditional Oracle database auditing.  Migrating to PURE Unified Auditing requires the database be stopped, the Oracle binary linked to uniaud_on, and then restarted.  This operation can be reversed if auditing needs to be changed back to Mixed Mode. 

When changing from Mixed to pure Unified Audit, two key changes occur.  The first is the audit trails are no longer written to their traditional pre-12c audit locations.  Auditing is consolidated into the Unified Audit views and stored using Oracle SecureFiles.  Oracle Secured Files use a proprietary format which means that Unified Audit logs cannot be viewed using editors such vi and may preclude or affect the use of third party logging solutions such as Splunk or HP ArcSight.  As such, Syslog auditing is not possible with Pure Unified Audit.

The second change is that the traditional audit configurations are no longer used.  For example, traditional auditing is largely driven by the AUDIT_TRAIL initialization parameter.  With pure Unified Audit, the initialization parameter AUDIT_TRAIL is ignored.

This was happening again and again. The DBAs were suspecting network issue, cluster issue, server issue and all the usual suspects.  In Database alert log we saw these errors coming every few seconds:

We tried changing the parameters in sqlnet.ora and listener.ora as instructed in the article:
Troubleshooting Guide for ORA-12537 / TNS-12537 TNS:Connection Closed (Doc ID 555609.1)

Sqlnet.ora: SQLNET.INBOUND_CONNECT_TIMEOUT=180
Listener.ora: INBOUND_CONNECT_TIMEOUT_listener_name=120

However, the errors continued.  To rule out any issues in network, I also restarted the network service on Linux:

service network restart

One thing which I noticed was the extra amount of time that the connect was taking 4 seconds:

Checked from remote app tier and it was same 4 seconds.

Stopped listener and checked on DB server that uses bequeath protocol:

21:18:47 SQL> conn / as sysdba
Connected.
21:18:51 SQL> conn / as sysdba
Connected.

Again it took 4 seconds.

A few days back, I had seen that connect time had increased after turning setting the DB initialization parameter pre_page_sga to true in a different instance.  On a hunch, I checked this and indeed pre_page_sga was set to true.  I set this back to false:

alter system set pre_page_sga=false scope=spfile;
shutdown immediate;
exit
sqlplus /nolog
conn / as sysdba
startup
SQL> set time on
22:09:46 SQL> conn / as sysdba
Connected.
22:09:49 SQL>

The connections were happening instantly.  So I went ahead and resumed the patch after setting:

update fnd_install_processes 
set control_code='W', status='W';

commit;

I restarted the patch and all the workers completed successfully.  And the patch was running significantly faster.  So I did a search on support.oracle.com to substantiate my solution with official Oracle documentation.  I found the following articles:

Slow Connection or ORA-12170 During Connect when PRE_PAGE_SGA init.ora Parameter is Set (Doc ID 289585.1)
Health Check Alert: Consider setting PRE_PAGE_SGA to FALSE (Doc ID 957525.1)

The first article (289585.1) says:
PRE_PAGE_SGA can increase the process startup duration, because every process that starts must access every page in the SGA. This approach can be useful with some applications, but not with all applications. Overhead can be significant if your system frequently creates and destroys processes by, for example, continually logging on and logging off. The advantage that PRE_PAGE_SGA can afford depends on page size.

The second article (957525.1) says:
Having the PRE_PAGE_SGA initialization parameter set to TRUE can significantly increase the time required to establish database connections.

The golden words here are "Overhead can be significant if your system frequently creates and destroys processes by, for example, continually logging on and logging off.".  That is exactly what happens when you do adpatch or adop.

Keep this in mind, whenever you do adpatch or adop, make sure that pre_page_sga is set to false.  It is possible that you may get the error "java.sql.SQLRecoverableException: IO Error: Socket read timed out" if you don't.  Also the patch will run significantly slower if pre_page_sga is set to true.  So set it to false and avoid these issues.

  • It’s a very exciting opportunity to experience the powerful Financial Reporting innovations in our Cloud offerings without disruption to your existing ERP investments.
  • It’s a way to take advantage of the Simplified Financials Report Center, optimized for easy access to reports on your choice of mobile device
  • It includes the sunburst data visualization tool, which was my killer demo last week at OpenWorld (see screen shot)
  • It’s a way to move to cloud in an incremental manner, realizing business benefits quickly without disruption to your existing business processes and systems.
  • It has a companion EBusiness Suite feature (available on 12.1.3 and 12.2.4) that will push all your set up and GL Balances to your cloud service and generate reports automatically for you.  Giving you a zero configuration reporting solution for you EBS GL Balances data (watch out for more detailed posts on this soon)
  • It has web services to load General Ledger data from PeopleSoft, JDE Edwards or any other ERP system.
  • It’s a way to get your hands on the Oracle Social Network which is part of the platform our Cloud offerings are built on.

That’s a decent list to start with, but there are a few things that it isn’t which I should call out

  • It is not(yet) the Accounting Hub Integration Platform with all the rule based accounting transformations provided by Subledger Accounting Architecture (SLA)
  • It is not a new name designed to confuse you when we already have Financials Accounting Hub and Fusion Accounting Hub.

Focus on #WorkLifeBalance at Oracle OpenWorld

I promised my 9 year old son that I would run the school 5K fun run with him, little did I know it would clash with Oracle OpenWorld.  I had a 5k run at 10am in Belmont and then a presentation to the OAUG GL Special Interest Group at 11am 20 mile sNorth in San Francisco.  I was worried about the pace my son could do but we managed to average 9.5 minute miles even with a stop to tie a shoe lace and a lot of traffic of all ages and speeds.  We had just enough time snap the picture below and then he went for the pancake breakfast with the rest of his friends and I ran another half mile to my car and headed to the Moscone Center.  No time to change and straight up on stage, with 10 minutes to spare before I was due to speak.  After that I caught up with a colleague who’s here from the UK over lunch and was home in time to upgrade my son’s home minecraft server to 1.8, write a blog and check on my demos for tomorrow’s Oracle Applications User Experience (OAUX) EXPO.

Yesterday, the users of an EBS R12.2 instance got this error when they logged in:

We tried bouncing services and deleting $EBS_DOMAIN_HOME/servers/oacore_server1/cache.  None of those actions helped.  Things got back to normal only after the Xmx, Xms,and permsize startup parameters for the oacore JVM were changed in weblogic console on Gary's suggestion:

-XX:PermSize=512m -XX:MaxPermSize=512m –Xms4096m –Xmx4096m

I also changed it in the context file:

Old: s_oacore_jvm_start_options">-XX:PermSize=128m -XX:MaxPermSize=384m -Xms512m -Xmx512m
New: s_oacore_jvm_start_options">-XX:PermSize=512m -XX:MaxPermSize=512m –Xms4096m –Xmx4096m

The oacore_server1 and oacore_server2 were bounced after this.  We haven't seen that error ever since.


There is a support.oracle.com article: Receive Intermittent Error You Have Encountered An Unexpected Error. Please Contact Your System Administrator (Doc ID 1519012.1)
CauseThere are user accounts having extremely high numbers of FUN_ADHOC_RECI_XXXXXXX / FUN_ADHOC_INIT_XXXXXXX assigned.

Users have an extremely high number of (ADHOC) ROLES assigned to them, so when these attempt to login this fills the JOC ( Java object cache ) and causes it to run into it's limits resulting in the errors reported. Once bounce is done all is working fine until such an user logs in again.

While working in AGIS and creating and progressing batches, in the workflow there are several ad hoc roles created which remain on the system and do not get end dated or deleted. This can cause performance issues.
Ad Hoc Roles in WF_LOCAL_ROLES starting with FUN_ADHOC_RECI_XXXXXXX ; FUN_ADHOC_INIT_XXXXXXX with no expiration_date.

A. Run the following SQL to verify if there are accounts having extreme numbers of roles assigned

SQL> SELECT user_name, count(*) FROM wf_user_roles WHERE role_name <> user_name GROUP BY user_name ORDER BY 2;


B. Run following for particular user

SQL> SELECT distinct role_name FROM wf_user_roles
WHERE user_name = cp_user_name
or (user_name = (SELECT name FROM wf_local_roles wlr, fnd_user fusr
WHERE fusr.person_party_id = wlr.orig_system_id
AND wlr.orig_system = 'HZ_PARTY'
AND fusr.user_name = cp_user_name
AND rownum < 2))
AND role_name <> user_name;

Note: Replace cp_user_name with name of user having high number of ADHOC roles


SolutionTo implement the solution, please execute the following steps:

1. Ensure that you have taken a backup of your system before applying the recommended solution.

2. Follow the steps given in document to purge the WF_LOCAL_ROLES for the AGIS transactions in 'COMPLETE' status.

3. If you are satisfied that the issue is resolved, migrate the solution as appropriate to other environments.



We had also logged SR with Oracle where they pointed us to the very same article and also asked us to do the following:

2. Define an expiration date for the ad hoc role:

3. Periodically, purge expired users and roles in order to improve performance.

exec WF_PURGE.Directory(end_date);

This purges all users and roles in the WF_LOCAL_ROLES,WF_LOCAL_USER_ROLES, and WF_USER_ROLE_ASSIGNMENTS tables whose expiration date is less than or
equal to the specified end date and that are not referenced in any notification.

Parameter: end_date Date to purge to.

For more information, please refer to Oracle Workflow API Reference on page 2 – 128.
Use the workflow API's to purge the ad hoc roles:

NOTE:
After end dating the adhoc roles, the expired adhoc roles can also be purged by running the Purge Obsolete Workflow Runtime Data concurrent program. Make sure the "Core Workflow Only" parameter set to N.

1. Extract CacheDefaultConfig.xml from cache.jar

- diskCache size was the parameter that fixed it.
- changed the max-objects as well as per the bug.

Focus on Accounting Hub at Oracle OpenWorld

Focus on User Groups at Oracle OpenWorld

Anyone who reads my blog regularly might be tired of me praising user groups, but I believe it is worth repeating myself.  The type of information sharing you get from user groups is unique and very valuable, it is important for Oracle to support that, be aware of it, but not interfere.  I have been involved with the Oracle Apps User Group via the GL SIG for several years now but I will never push my agenda, I listen, provide information or presentations that are requested and I learn.  Many of my colleagues will tell you the same.  So Sunday is User Group day at OpenWorld and I look forward to seeing a lot of familiar faces and learning something new.  I have a bit of a schedule crunch this year, 12 months ago I committed to run the 5k “Dolphin Dash” School fundraiser with my 8 year old son, I didn’t think for a minute it would fall on the same date as OpenWorld.  So I have to run a 5k at 9am and then dash into San Francisco to present at the GL SIG for 11am, if I arrive in my running gear, still sweating please accept my apologies.  I will stay around for more of the sessions and always I will be active on twitter, so you can find me that way too.

Focus on Oracle Social Network at OpenWorld

This is the first of a series of posts I am planning leading up to Oracle OpenWorld which starts in less than a week.  I have a few different focus areas this year, so I’ll write a little about each of them.

I’ve been talking about collaboration in ERP for quite some time and was also very flattered to have TheAppsLab and Ultan (@ultan) for the UX team cover what we have done in their blogs too.  I call it Socializing the Finance Department, it isn’t about more Pot Luck Lunches and after work drinks, it is about using social tools in a secure and efficient manner, embedded in your ERP system, tied to your transactions and business flows to make you more productive.

The Oracle Social Network(OSN) is part of the infrastructure we build our cloud applications on, so it is pervasive in our cloud apps.  There are a lot of good sessions, see here for the complete OSN list.  I will be on a panel discussing the best use cases for social in enterprise applications, Tuesday September 30th 5pm – 5:45pm  – Moscone West – 3022, full details here.

Can chatting make you more productive?

According to the CEB Corporate Leadership Council High Performance Survey, 2012, the average worker collaborates with 10 or more people to accomplish day to day tasks.  That is a lot of chatting.  We think that this chatting needs to be be tied to the business transaction you are working with and the best way to do that is by having the collaboration tool as part of your ERP application.  This is what you get with Oracle ERP Cloud.  I have discussed what social is in the ERP Cloud world in my earlier post Socializing the Finance Department that you can review to get a background.  The key message here is that the collaboration must be tied to a transaction.  Take a look at the video below to illustrate the point and see it in action.

I think you will agree this type of chatting, or as Alan Leposfsky (@alanlepo) of Constellation Research would call it, purposeful collaboration, clearly does make you and your organization more productive.

Heart Walk at Oracle HQ

Tomorrow Oracle is hosting a Bay Area Heart Walk at it’s HQ campus and it should be a huge event, not only raising valuable funds but also raising awareness of the importance of a heart healthy lifestyle.  Since the beginning of this year I have been doing regular walking meetings and have enjoyed the benefits to both my health and my productivity.  I also found many other people already doing walking meetings and others who have been inspired to start them.  I’ve really enjoyed the overwhelmingly positive responses and encouragement.

Highlights of the event include the Semi Official Oracle house band, Scope Creep, check out this YouTube clip, you may recognize some of the faces including my boss on drums, who I can confirm does not appreciate my joke – what do you call somebody with no talent who hangs with musicians? – answers in the comment section please.

I will be walking with ‘Team Erb’ led by the energetic and enthusiastic (except when it comes to twitter) Janine Erb, who is one of the singers in the YouTube clip above.  We have close to 100 people in the team and I’m looking forward to walking with and talking to people I have known and worked with for a long time and also making some new friends.  If you are there tomorrow, come and say hi.  I’ll take some pictures and probably tweet during the event.

CIFS performance problem

Today we encountered some performance problems at our customer site. After checking with the customer it seemed that especially the CIFS shares were having problems. At first CIFS was getting slower until the shares were not even accessible anymore. Guest Post: Custom Balancing by 2 segments in EBS R12

This is a guest post from Sangeeta Sameer, who worked for Oracle for 6 years before moving on to work for GE where has held a number of senior positions.  She has also joined the board of the OAUG Multinational Special Interest Group.

At the Collaborate 2014 Conference, David Haimes and I presented a custom solution to enable balancing by 2 segments of the Chart of Accounts in Release 12.1.3 of Oracle e-Business Suite. The attached PowerPoint and Paper that we presented describes in detail the requirements and the custom solution.

So when David asked me to write a guest post about this topic, I thought about what else I would include in the paper if we were writing it again. While the paper talks about the requirement to create a balanced Trial Balance by 2 segments, it does not expand on why we need a balanced Trial Balance by 2 segments. Global corporations like General Electric (GE) need better granularity and accountability for the financial performance of their geographical divisions and lines of businesses by being able to create a Balance Sheet at both a Legal Entity/Statutory level and Business Unit/Management Entity level. GE is a Global conglomerate that has diverse businesses operating in a large number of countries. GE needs the ability to create a balanced Trial Balance by the Legal Entity (LE) and the Management Entity (ME) segments in the Chart of Accounts.

The ability to automatically balance by more than one segment is not a new requirement for GE, and I think it would be a requirement for other multinational companies as well. This requirement is explained quite well in Oracle Fusion Applications Enterprise Structures Concepts Guide 11g Release 5 (11.1.5) – Part # E22899-05. See the section titled “Legal Entity and Its Relationship to Balancing Segments”. While Fusion Applications are able to balance by up to 3 segments in the Chart of Accounts, Oracle e-Business Suite (EBS) Applications are able to balance by one segment only.

In prior EBS Release 11i implementations at GE, the requirement to balance by 2 segments was satisfied by developing custom solutions that needed to be re-visited for Release 12. For example, one of the solutions in 11i was for a custom program to bring balancing entries into the Interface Table. With the introduction of SLA in Release 12, this 11i solution was no longer a good one for R12. The solution described in the attached Paper and PowerPoint is a much more robust solution, and is live in Production for 2 different ERP Projects at GE.

The OAUG Multinational Special Interest Group (SIG) is organizing a webinar on June 11th at 10.30 am Pacific (1.30 pm Eastern) on this topic. David and I will repeat the presentation from Collaborate 2014, and look forward to sharing this solution again. The webinar will be one hour long, including 20-25 minutes for Q&A.

Last week I attended a Wearables Design Jam organized by Ultan (@ultan) from the Oracle UX team (a future post is coming on the event) and since then I have been thinking about what makes a successful wearable device.  The most successful devices in the marketplace seem to be the fitness trackers and I have had great benefit from my fitbit, not least of all the inspiration for walking meetings.  A fitness tracker is not a new idea (I joke that a fitbit is just a $100 pedometer), but the wearable devices today make tracking your fitness so much easier.  No need to keep diaries of your activities, everything is there for you in a dashboard with all sorts of interesting analytics, goal setting, alerts etc.

The GoPro has similarities, it is a small personal camcorder with only memory, no tape and no screen for viewing, similar to the Flip camera which Cisco bought and then killed and many other cameras.  However it takes action videos really well, with very little effort and is pretty much indestructible so you can take it  anywhere.  They produce professional quality video and photos including time lapse videos, fast frame rates for smooth slow motion and have an ultra wide field of view so you rarely miss any action.  You can also attach them to your body, bike and other helmets, cars and of course surfboards. My model (Hero 3+ Black edition) has WiFi so I can control it from my iPhone or iPad and grab content from it easily, although that does drain the battery fast.

If you haven’t already seen it, you must check out the Time Lapse video I took with the GoPro of the Team USA Americas Cup yacht being installed at Oracle HQ.  This was around 9,000 photos taken over 50+ hours compressed into a 2 minute video.  I have also strapped it to my car to capture a journey down the highway 1, strapped it to the outside of my car, strapped it to a remote control car, strapped it to myself and my kids in a swimming pool, to my Son’s bike and to my daughter’s wheeled shoes.  Now I am trying to think of some enterprise applications of this amazing device, watch this space.

UPDATE (5/28/14):

I was reading a post from my colleague John Cartan this morning about his experience with the the Narrative Clip which is a smaller device, intended to be used for life logging.  It is worn all the time and captures a picture every 30 seconds.  The experience did not seem to be great, but I think a GoPro, altho a little bigger would be much better for this purpose.  I could imagine wearing it all day at a conference say, or in a series of meetings, brainstorming sessions etc. it would give a really good replay of events.  I will probably try some of this in the coming weeks, just to see how interesting it is.

Maker Faire, Java and the Internet of Things

makerpassMaker Faire is a popular event here in the San Francisco Bay Area, I’ve been going with my kids for several years now and all of us look forward to it every year.  I describe it as everything from embroidery to fire breathing robots, anything you can make is there and everyone is passionate about making stuff and everyone enjoys sharing their passion.

However this year I was there as staff with the Apps Lab who were providing a DIY activity for the Java team who are a big supporter of Maker Faire, Jake explains in detail in his blog.  My summary is we showed use of embedded java on a Raspberry Pis to control a variety of devices with input from other devices, for example I could use a motion sensor to turn on a fan, or send a tweet or send an SMS message.  It was an interesting experience showing this off to people, explaining what we mean by the internet of things and seeing people’s reaction.  There are a huge range of ages and types of people at Maker Fairs, so it was cool to see young and old alike enjoying making things happen.  The most interesting thing to see first hand is how young children (as young as 4 or 5) can just figure out how to do things with minimal guidance and in fact seem to prefer to explore on their own, older people are much quicker to get help or listen to me explain rather than do it.  I have no idea what this means, if anything, but it was interesting to me at least.

Report from Collaborate 14, Las Vegas

Last month I attended and presented at Collaborate, the largest Oracle conference outside of Open World and one where the agenda is determined by the user community.

I was well organized this year; before I attended the conference I had downloaded the mobile App and started creating a conference agenda, I was a little bit disappointed that I had to manually add sessions I was presenting to my agenda, seems like a missing feature and it did not create the best first impression.  However, I then found the mobile app really good, a lot of discussions, the ability to comment on sessions and all the good social features you would expect.  When the conference got started the gamification they had added (a simple leader board of activity) helped to drive adoption and also caused some controversy, I’ll stay out of that but I would recommend reading Debra Lilley’s thoughts on it.

Throughout the week many people were talking about how several sessions they wanted to attend seemed to be scheduled at the same time. My first thought about this was that they were just making a polite excuse for not attending some of my sessions, but then I did observe the same thing myself.  It is hard having to choose between two or often three very interesting and useful sessions which are on at the same time, it is also tough when attendance at some sessions is lower than they deserve.  However, as I thought more about it, I feel it should be seen as a positive that the quality of the sessions and the presenters was very high.

My session on Fusion Accounting Hub and GLobal Charts of Accounts and Consolidation was on Monday and I had a decent crowd, got through a lot of material and had some really good questions (and I hope the answers were good).  I mentioned on my blog that FAH was the talk of the town based on the number of sessions that were covering it, I certainly spent  lots of time discussing it with people over the course of the conference.  We had a good GL SIG group meeting, I did a few minutes about the management segment and Data Access Sets in EBusiness Suite GL Release 12.  I was surprised that more people were not aware of this very useful feature, maybe I should blog about it (he says, adding it to a long to do list).  My third session was co-presented with Sangeeta Sameer from GE, I have asked Sangeeta to write a guest blog post introducing it, sharing the paper and announcing a webinar repeat of it – watch this space.

Exciting that all the things were, probably the part I enjoyed most was talking to so many people who had implemented or were implementing Cloud ERP Apps.  I had a chance to hear the positive comments and excitement that customers and partners had, but equally chat about where the y had suggestions for improvements.  We have a lot of very experienced, motivated and very smart partners out there and I enjoy every minute talking with them and learning from them, hopefully helping them out with a few tips too.

So next up for me is Open World, I did not make KScope this year, but one day I would like to go there, but for my particular field Collaborate is a must conference and if you have never been I would highly recommend you consider it next year, I will certainly be submitting a paper.

America’s Cup Boat Installation Time Lapse Video

On Friday I realized the America’s Cup yacht was going to be installed at Oracle HQ over the weekend so I went home and got my GoPro camera and set it up to take a picture every 30 seconds.  For some reason it shut off on Saturday morning, when the helicopter brought the hull over the building, but I still think the footage came out pretty well.  Take a look and let me know what you think in the comments below.

Americas Cup Winning Boat Arrives at Oracle HQ

On May 20th 2008, I arrived at work and was surprised to see an Americas cup yacht as I looked out from my office window and posted pictures to this blog.  This weekend, almost 6 years later to the day, we had a new boat arrive to live on the lake and this time I was ready because preparations have been going on for a while.  I popped into the office on Saturday to see how it was looking and it was looking, well it was looking very big.  These multi hulled machines are amazing pieces engineering and seeing one so close is pretty cool.  Take a look below at the old boat and the new one viewed from the same office and you will get an idea of the difference in size.  More pictures to come soon…

Fusion Accounting Hub is the talk of Las Vegas

As I was planning my agenda for the Collaborate 14 (#C14LV) conference next week, I noticed a lot of sessions on Fusion Accounting Hub.  In my earlier post defining Fusion Accounting Hub (FAH) I introduced this idea of a reporting platform, it is a compelling reporting and consolidation solution and as such is gaining a a lot of attention, particularly when Coexisting with Ebusiness Suite, Peoplesoft or JD Edwards ERP systems.

Collaborate 14 Paper: Balancing by 2 Segments

It is a very common requirement to automatically balance by two different segments of the chart of accounts, typically the Legal Entity and some sort of Management Entity (department, line of business, cost center, etc).  Fusion financials allows you to balance by up to three segments, which is always a well received feature.  However at Collaborate you can learn how one company built a custom to do this in EBusiness Suite.  I’m honored to have been asked to Co-present with GE on this topic, they have done some really good work here and I’m sure it will be of great interest to others too.  So come along and join us, you’ll get the specifics of what they did, the details are below:
